I did not have a sexual relationship with that woman!

Vergeet de dubieuze claim in het Amerikaanse equivalent van de Story, enkele maanden terug, dat John Edwards een affaire had. Dat was peanuts. John McCain, daarentegen, lijkt nu toch serieus een probleem te hebben. John McCain zou namelijk in 2000, tijdens zijn campagne voor de presidentiële nominatie destijds, een affaire hebben gehad met een lobbyiste genaamd Vicki Iseman (hier op de foto met Sjors DubbelJoe Boesj). Probleem voor McCain is dat de bron nu niet een rancuneus roddelblaadje is, maar de gezaghebbende New York Times. Wij bij SYWBANP zijn natuurlijk allang blij dat we nu eindelijk de affaire van deze verkiezingscampagne te pakken hebben, maar wat is het verhaal nu precies? Uit de NYT:

"A female lobbyist had been turning up with him at fund-raisers, visiting his offices and accompanying him on a client’s corporate jet. Convinced the relationship had become romantic, some of his top advisers intervened to protect the candidate from himself — instructing staff members to block the woman’s access, privately warning her away and repeatedly confronting him, several people involved in the campaign said on the condition of anonymity. In interviews, two former associates said they joined in a series of confrontations with Mr. McCain, warning him that he was risking his campaign and career. Both said Mr. McCain acknowledged behaving inappropriately and pledged to keep his distance from Ms. Iseman. The two associates, who said they had become disillusioned with the senator, spoke independently of each other and provided details that were corroborated by others."

McCain ontkent in alle toonaarden en roept dat de Times zich schuldig maakt aan een "smear campaign". Bij het lobbyistenbureau waar Iseman werkzaam is zijn de gedeeltes van de website waar het team wordt voorgesteld en de klantenlijst wordt gepubliceerd al dichtgegooid. Rechtse blogs roepen ondertussen dat de New York Times nu moord en brand schreeuwt, terwijl ze zich in de tijd van Billary en Monica gedeisd hielden.
